Fire Island Pines is the prime playground of the New York gay community affectionately named ‘Chelsea with sand’. Thousands of gay men descend on a small village of only a few dozen permanent residents every summer for swimming, sunbathing and general frolics.

It has everything you need: a marina, restaurants, bars, a gym, a large open-air dance stage perfect for circuit parties, retail shops, a pool  – even a post office and a police department. And, of course, gay men in abundance.

Cheap it is not, but who counts the money when one is having so much fun?

How to get there

The easiest way to get to Fire Island, get the Long Island Railroad from Penn station in New York to Sayville (change at Jamaica or babylon). A shuttle bus runs between the station and the ferry terminal. A ferry leaves from Sayville every hour (more frequently in the peak season) and stops at the Pines Marina. A day return package including all tickets costs around $32. Last updated: 03-05-2014
