The transformation of Puerto Vallarta from a traditional fishing village to a glitzy resort started in the early sixties with the filming of Tennessee Williams’ “Night of the Iguana” by John Huston, one of those old Hollywood movies with a subtle gay theme. Attracting the paparazzi was a galactic cast: Ava Gardner, Debora Kerr and Richard Burton, who brought along his new girlfriend, Elizabeth Taylor. In fact, “El Set” still stands in the small bay of Mismaloya just outside Puerto Vallarta, and is an attraction in itself.
In the last twenty years, a special effort has been made by the locals to attract gay tourists from the United States and Canada and the response has been overwhelming, as gay holidaymakers appreciate being welcome. As a result, Puerto Vallarta with is beautiful long curve of a bay has become the biggest gay resort in Latin America with hotels, clubs, saunas and a vibrant nightlife, all year long.
The village is split by the Rio Cuale with the family condos and skyscraper hotels in the beaches north of the river while the less concreted south attracts the gay clientele in the Playa Los Muertos. But with the scene concentrating in the charming old town, beautifully renamed La Zona Romantica, who is complaining?
