The most famous beach of the Americas which, despite its many syllables, rolls smoothly off the tongue thanks to Barry Manilow’s eponymous hit and its subsequent cabaret success. Even if you have seen the beach on YouTube and TV, nothing prepares you for your first sight: the four-kilometre long perfect curve, the view of Sugarloaf mountain, the width of the sandy stretch or the ‘dental floss’ swimsuits of the women and the low-cut bermudas of the men.
This is where Rio congregates to celebrate: during New Years’s Eve, Carnival and the gay parade in October, you may not even find a decent place to sit down.
The gay part of the beach has traditionally been in front of Hotel Copacabana towards the north end, but because the beach is so enormous, there are many who don’t bother walking so far from Ipanema and hang around at the southern end, as well.
